How to Plan Outfits for a Trip (Without Overpacking)

To plan outfits for a trip, start from the trip, not the closet. Write down each day and what it holds (travel, walking, a nice dinner, the weather), choose a small set of pieces that all go together, turn them into one outfit per day, and put each outfit on its date. Then pack exactly what is on that plan and nothing else. The bag gets smaller because every piece in it has a job.

Here is the method step by step, with a sample four-day trip.

A trip day with a daytime look and an evening look: when every day is planned, the packing list writes itself.

The short version: (1) list the trip days and what each one needs, (2) pick a travel capsule of pieces that all work together, built around two or three colors, (3) make one look per day, plus an evening look where you need one, (4) put the looks on a calendar, (5) pack only what appears on it, (6) wear your bulkiest outfit on the way there.

Step 1: List the days and what they need

Open a note or your calendar and give each day of the trip a line:

This takes five minutes and decides most of the packing. A city weekend with one nice dinner needs very different clothes from a week at the beach.

Step 2: Pick a small travel capsule

A travel capsule is a short list of pieces that all go together, so a few items make many outfits. Our guide on how to build a capsule wardrobe explains the idea for everyday life; for a trip you do the same thing on a smaller scale.

If your closet is in an app, pick from there. In Looksy you can filter your closet by category or favorites and sort it by most worn, which puts your reliable pieces at the top.

Step 3: Turn the capsule into outfits

Now make a full outfit for every day on your list, using only the capsule. Lay the pieces on the bed, or build the outfits in your digital closet.

In Looksy, each outfit is a look: you pick the pieces from your closet, name it ("Travel day", "Dinner out") and arrange them on a canvas. If you are stuck on a day, the What to Wear? shuffle puts an outfit together from your closet, one piece per category, and lets you lock the pieces you want to keep, filter by occasion and season, and save the result as a look.

Five looks from ten pieces: the jeans, shirts, shoes and jacket repeat, so the bag stays small.

Step 4: Put the looks on the trip dates

Write each outfit against its day: a note on your phone, a sheet of paper in the suitcase, or a calendar. Seeing the whole trip at once shows you gaps (no outfit for the rainy day) and extras (three tops for two days).

In Looksy you open the Calendar tab, tap a date in the week strip or open the full calendar, and add one or more looks to it. Days with a look get a marker, so you can see the whole trip at a glance. Planning a look does not mark it as worn, so changing the plan on the trip does not mess up your wear history.

The full calendar shows the whole trip at a glance, so you can spot a day without an outfit before you pack.

Be aware of the free plan's limit: Looksy's free plan lets you schedule looks up to 3 days ahead. That covers a short trip if you plan it a day or two before you leave, but for a longer trip, or to plan weeks in advance, you need Looksy+, which lets you plan as far ahead as you like. On the free plan you can still make all the looks in advance (up to 20), name them by day, and put them on the calendar once the dates are within 3 days.

Step 5: Pack only what is on the plan

Go through the plan day by day and pack every piece the first time it appears. Then stop. If a piece is not in any outfit, it stays home.

  1. Wear the bulkiest outfit to travel. The jacket, the heaviest shoes and the jeans go on you, not in the bag.
  2. Add the basics the plan does not show: underwear, socks, sleepwear, and anything for the gym or the pool.
  3. Allow one spare top, if you like a safety margin for spills. One, not three.
  4. Check the rules for your bag. If you fly from the US with only a carry-on, the TSA's liquids rule limits liquids, gels and creams to travel-size containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, in one quart-sized bag. Carry-on size and weight limits vary by airline, so check yours on the airline's website.
  5. Do a last check against the plan. Every look should have all its pieces in the bag.

A sample four-day trip

Here is a four-day fall city trip planned from ten pieces: a denim jacket, a green knit cardigan, a white tee, a blue oxford shirt, dark straight-leg jeans, black slim jeans, a black sleeveless dress, white sneakers, black ankle boots and a brown leather bag.

DayWhat is onLook
WednesdayTravelDenim jacket, white tee, dark jeans, ankle boots, bag
ThursdaySightseeingGreen cardigan, white tee, black jeans, sneakers
Thursday nightDinner outBlack dress, ankle boots, bag
FridayMuseums, walkingDenim jacket, oxford shirt, dark jeans, sneakers
SaturdayTravel homeGreen cardigan, oxford shirt, black jeans, ankle boots

Count the repeats: the ankle boots three times, and every other piece twice, except the dress, which is there for the one evening that needs it. The boots and the bag double as the evening shoes and bag, which saves packing a second set. On the way there, the jacket, tee, jeans, boots and bag are worn or carried, so the suitcase only needs a shirt, a cardigan, one pair of jeans, a dress and the sneakers, plus the basics.

During the trip

Plans change on a trip even more than at home. It rains, or a walking day turns into a beach day. Swap outfits between days freely; because everything in the capsule goes together, any top works with any bottom.

When you get home, think about what you actually wore. Pieces you never put on are the ones to leave behind next time. In Looksy you can tap Mark as Worn on a look the day you wear it, and every piece in it gets a wear counted, so your next trip starts from what really works. If you plan outfits at home too, our guide on how to plan outfits for the week uses the same steps for a normal week.

Tips that make it easier

Looksy is free for up to 50 items and 20 looks, which is enough for a travel capsule and an outfit for every day of a normal trip.

Common questions

How many outfits should I pack for a trip?

One per day, plus one for each evening you will change for, plus one spare top. On trips longer than a week, plan up to your first laundry day and repeat from there.

How do I avoid overpacking clothes?

Plan every outfit before you pack and only pack what is in an outfit. Choose pieces in two or three colors that all go together, repeat bottoms and shoes, and wear your bulkiest pieces while traveling.

What is a travel capsule wardrobe?

A small set of clothes for one trip, chosen so that every top works with every bottom and one or two pairs of shoes go with everything. A few pieces turn into an outfit for every day.

Can I plan a whole trip in Looksy for free?

You can save up to 20 looks on the free plan, but scheduling looks on the calendar is limited to 3 days ahead. For a short trip that starts soon, that is enough. To put a longer trip on the calendar, or to plan it weeks in advance, you need Looksy+.

Does Looksy make a packing list?

No. Looksy has no packing list feature. Your planned looks show which pieces you need, so you pack from the calendar.
