How to Plan Outfits for the Week
To plan outfits for the week, set aside 15 minutes on Sunday: look at what your week holds, pick one outfit per day from clothes that are clean and fit the weather, write each one on a calendar, then hang or lay out the first couple of days. During the week you just get dressed, and note what you actually wore.
That is the whole method. Here it is step by step, with a sample week.

The short version: check your calendar and the forecast (2 minutes), pick a look for each day starting with the busiest one (5 minutes), schedule the looks on a calendar (3 minutes), and check that everything is clean and ready (5 minutes). Repeat pieces on purpose, keep one spare outfit, and mark what you wear so next Sunday is easier.
Before your first Sunday: have a few outfits ready
Planning goes fastest when you choose from outfits you already know work, instead of inventing seven from scratch. Spend one evening putting together five to ten combinations you like: a work outfit or two, a weekend outfit, something for going out. Write them down, take photos, or save them in an app.
If your clothes are already photographed, this is easy. Our guide on how to make a digital closet covers getting everything into your phone, and the last step is exactly this: saving outfits you can reuse.
The 15-minute Sunday routine
1. Check the week (2 minutes)
Open your calendar and note what each day needs from your clothes:
- Office, school or home days
- Meetings or presentations where you want to look sharper
- Gym, sport or a long walk, so you plan for a change of clothes
- Evening plans: dinner, a date, a party
- Laundry day, if a favorite piece will be in the wash
Then check the forecast. In the US, the National Weather Service gives a local forecast by city or ZIP code. You only need the rough shape of the week: which days are cold, warm or wet.
2. Pick a look for each day (5 minutes)
Start with the hardest day, usually the one with an important meeting or evening plans, and give it your best outfit. Then fill in the rest around it.
A few rules that keep this quick:
- Repeat bottoms and shoes. Jeans and white sneakers can work three times a week with different tops. Nobody keeps count.
- Plan for the weather you checked. A cardigan or jacket you can take off covers a day that starts cold and ends warm.
- Use what is clean. If your navy blazer is at the dry cleaner, it is not part of this week.
- Give the forgotten pieces a turn. Sunday is a good time to pull out something you have not worn in a while.
If you are stuck on a day, Looksy's What to Wear? shuffle puts together an outfit from your closet, one piece per category, leaning toward the things you wear least. Lock the pieces you want to keep, shuffle the rest, and save the result as a look.

3. Put them on a calendar (3 minutes)
Write each outfit against its day. A sticky note on the closet door works. So does a note on your phone. The point is that on Tuesday morning you look, you do not think.
In Looksy you open the Calendar tab, tap a day in the week strip, add one or more looks to it, and they show up with a picture of the outfit. A day can hold two looks, which is handy for a work outfit plus something for the gym or an evening out. Planning a look does not count as wearing it, so your wear history stays accurate if plans change.
On the free plan, Looksy lets you schedule looks up to 3 days ahead. So on Sunday you plan Monday to Wednesday, then take two minutes on Wednesday to plan Thursday to Saturday. Looksy+ lets you plan as far ahead as you like.
4. Get the first days ready (5 minutes)
Planning only saves time if the clothes are ready when you need them:
- Check that every piece is clean and in one piece: no missing button, no stain from last time.
- Iron or steam what needs it now, not at 7:40 on a weekday.
- Check the care label before you plan the same piece twice in a week. In the US, the FTC's Care Labeling Rule means most clothes carry washing or dry cleaning instructions, so you can tell what can go through the wash midweek.
- Hang Monday and Tuesday together, top and bottoms on one hanger with shoes underneath, or lay them on a chair.
A sample week
Here is what a planned week can look like with a normal closet: two pairs of jeans, a few tops, a blazer, a cardigan, three pairs of shoes.
| Day | What is on | Outfit |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Office, team meeting | Navy blazer, white shirt, straight-leg jeans, loafers |
| Tuesday | Office, rain forecast | Olive cardigan, wide-leg jeans, ankle boots |
| Wednesday | Work from home, gym | Sweatshirt, straight-leg jeans, white sneakers; gym kit packed |
| Thursday | Office, client lunch | Navy blazer again, striped top, wide-leg jeans, loafers |
| Friday | Office, dinner out | Olive cardigan, straight-leg jeans, white sneakers; leather jacket for the evening |
| Spare | If a plan changes | Your easiest go-to outfit, clean and ready |
Notice the repeats: the blazer twice, each pair of jeans two or three times, the white sneakers twice. A week of outfits does not need a week of different clothes.
During the week: mark what you wear
Plans change. It rains on the day you planned suede, or a meeting moves. Swap outfits freely; the plan is there to help, not to obey.
What helps next Sunday is knowing what you actually wore. In Looksy, open the look on the day you wear it and tap Mark as Worn. Every piece in the look gets a wear counted and a last-worn date, so after a few weeks you can sort your closet by least worn and see which clothes never make the plan.

Tips that make it stick
- Do it at the same time every week. Sunday evening, after laundry, works for most people.
- Keep one outfit in reserve for the day that does not go to plan.
- Plan five days, not seven, if weekends are relaxed. Weekend outfits are easy to decide on the day.
- Do not buy anything for the plan. If a day is hard to dress for, that is useful to know, but try a new combination of what you own first.
Looksy is free for up to 50 items and 20 looks, which is enough for the clothes you wear in a normal week and a good menu of outfits.
Common questions
How many outfits do I need for a week?
Five to seven, depending on how you spend your weekend, plus one spare. They can share most of their pieces: a few bottoms, two pairs of shoes and five or six tops are enough to make a week of different outfits.
Should I plan outfits for the whole week or a few days at a time?
A full week on Sunday is the easiest habit for most people, because it matches laundry and work weeks. If your plans change a lot, planning three days at a time works too: Sunday for Monday to Wednesday, Wednesday for the rest.
Is it okay to wear the same thing twice in one week?
Yes. Repeating jeans, shoes and outer layers is what makes a small closet work. Check the care label for pieces worn close to the skin, and give them a wash when they need it.
What if the weather changes after I plan?
Swap that day with another planned outfit, or with your spare. Planning layers, like a cardigan or a light jacket, makes most outfits work for a range of temperatures.
Does planning an outfit in Looksy mark it as worn?
No. Scheduling a look on the calendar and marking it as worn are separate, so your wear counts only include what you actually wore.
